It may sound outrageous – or completely unbelievable; but how does a round of golf on a grassless golf course sound?
Well, it can be done. Australia’s Coober Pedy Opal Fields Golf Course is a proudly ‘grassless’ golf course. Set in a desert, the fairways are maintained by by spreading the local white sandstone on rough areas, and by rolling after the very odd bouts of rain.
Tees are topped with artificial turf to allow for a suitable teeing-ground.
The greens are called “Scrapes”. They are made of local quarry dust which is mixed with waste oil. The mixture gives a very suitable putting and approach surface for playing when it is properly mixed and correctly laid.
